“Discipleship Uncomplicated”, The 8 Principles of Disciple Making by Dr. Warren Haynes

Principle 8 – Multiply Leaders – Empower Rapid Advance (part 12)

Coach to develop new leaders. Recruiting is where we begin to multiply leaders and reach new people. I have learned there are many people, both in local congregations and in communities, who have a relationship with Jesus Christ, but have never been personally discipled. Right now there are many people who would readily spend time with you and allow you to sow these disciple-making skills into their lives. I have found that many people are waiting for a personal invitation to be a part of something that truly matters.

A positive interaction with a person you are recruiting employs the skills we have covered. We get to know them by name, pray for them, demonstrate that we care about them, listen to their stories/share our stories, give them a personal invitation to go through Discipleship Uncomplicated with us, and gather them into a one-on-one or personal group.

As you start recruiting, here are a few suggestions. Start small and work out the bugs. I recommend starting by building a bench of three people. I simply follow the example of Jesus when he gathered Peter, James, and John. The pace of life is hectic for most people, and disciple making requires that we spend quantity personal time with them.

I have personally made many mistakes along the way, and recruiting more people than I could keep up with has been one of them. This cripples disciple-making momentum. If you find yourself canceling meetings or going weeks between them, then scale back the number of people you are investing in.

The goal is to multiply leaders who are reaching new people and multiplying their own leaders. When you embrace multiplying quality leaders, then being truly productive takes precedent over being busy. Busyness doesn’t make us productive; results make us productive. Producing disciples who love and follow Jesus and inspiring others to do the same makes us productive disciple makers.

Start recruiting people from your Reach List and those the Lord brings into your life. Ask God to lead you and start extending personal invitations. You can recruit in person, over the phone, or by setting up a meeting.
