Bible study – December 2024

Last month, when we talked about World Vision, I had forgotten the Vietnamese name. MS Van Dai nói “Hội hoàn cầu khải tượng”, that they had done a lot of works to help the church in Vietnam. Thank God that World Vision came to Vietnam among the world’s nations.

Let’s compare “đồng sống với Chúa Jesus” with “sống đạo” and “thông công với Chúa Jesus”. Both sống đạo and thông công are words we use in the church. We understand vì đã quen thuộc. The people not in church nghe lạ và thấy khó hiểu. After we tiếp tục suy nghĩ thêm together, hope that you also like this bản dịch này.

With this bible study, we should be very khích lệ nhiều during the last days of the year. God loved us so much that He chose us to be His children. If we have children, we know that our love for our children is sâu xa and we are ready to sacrifice for our children. Jesus is God did sacrifice by dying on the cross for us. Before God saved us, we were nobody and worst than that, we are sinners, rotten (hư hoại), despicable (đáng khinh tởm). We now are children of the Light, are chosen and have the privilege (đặc quyền) to participate (tham dự) in the will of God and (đồng công, đồng hành) with the plans of the Creator, and above all, to “đồng sống”  with His son, Jesus Christ. It’s a gift, beautiful and precious from God that we wholeheartedly celebrate during the Christmas season.
Đồng sống với Chúa Jesus provides us a clearer picture of us with Jesus, with the Spirit of Jesus, the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of us. This is what Jesus said in John 14:16-17 – “Ta lại sẽ nài xin Cha, Ngài sẽ ban cho các ngươi một Đấng yên ủi khác, để ở với các ngươi đời đời, tức là Thần lẽ thật, mà thế gian không thể nhận lãnh được, vì chẳng thấy và chẳng nhận biết Ngài, nhưng các người biết Ngài, vì Ngài vẫn ở với các ngươi và sẽ ở trong các ngươi” and Romans 8:9 – “Về phần anh em, nếu thật quả Thánh linh Đức Chúa Trời ở trong mình, thì không sống theo xác thịt đâu, nhưng theo Thánh linh; song nếu ai không có Thánh linh của Đấng Christ, thì người ấy chẳng thuộc về Ngài”. Another Bible verse to give us a picture of đồng sống với Chúa Jesus is in John 15:4. This verse tells us Jesus’ power and life in Him sẽ lan tràn through us and we can live and can bear fruit.
When we “đi theo Chúa”, we could follow God from a distance, sometimes close or sometimes farther, and sometimes we stray away… all of us have experienced this. The word “đi theo Chúa” gives us the picture that God is the leader and we follow Him. While that is true, God also calls us His friends. Friends sit by each other, talk to each other, do things together like drink coffee or eat phở.. and spend a lot of time together… A very close relationship of equals, of friends, of brothers.

We have an active role when we participate in God’s will and plans. God will do miracles through us. God is the omnipotent Creator, does not need anything and God can speak things into existence. But God wants us to share in His work and to experience Him just by obedience and with the little things we have. We know the miracle that Jesus fed 5,000 people from just “2 fish and 5 loaves” made available to Him by a little boy (Matt 14). The little boy offered all he had and Jesus blessed it, did a big miracle. I believe we all wish to do something for Jesus because we are grateful to Him and maybe we don’t have a lot, so what can we do? God said, if we seek, we will find. God knows our grateful hearts and God will give us the answers and the Holy Spirit will reveal God’s will to us. So the first thing we need to do is praying.

Đồng sống với Chúa Jesus và ân điển của Chúa là một sự mầu nhiệm which we can study a long time. For now, we can choose two easy things that friends typically do together – talking and working together. When we share life with Jesus, we also talk with him (praying and reading the Bible) and work with Him.

Talking with God:

When we pray, we may call on God’s names to move the heaven. Here are a few names of God that we often hear about:

Jehovah-Jireh: “The Lord Provides.” ĐCT ban cho
Jehovah-Rapha: “The Lord Heals.”  ĐCT chữa lành
Jehovah-Shalom: “The Lord Is Peace.” ĐCT bình an (we often say Chúa bình an trong mùa Giáng sinh)
Jehovah-Rohi: “The Lord Is My Shepherd.” – ĐCT là Đấng chăn giữ, bảo phòng

God wants us to cry out to Him when we need God’s provisions, healing, peace or protection. God will give us what we need, so that we will thank Him and glorify Him.

Paul said in Eph 1:18-19, we have God’s riches and great power. Thật vậy, tên của Chúa Jesus có quyền năng lớn and was manifested when Peter prayed and called on the name of Jesus to heal the crippled (người què) in Acts 3, “Nhưng Phiero nói với người rằng: Ta chẳng có vàng bạc chi hết, song điều ta có thì ta cho ngươi: Nhân danh Đức Chúa Jesus Christ ở Naxaret, hãy bước đi. Jesus’ name has power to heal and to give what we ask in His name. Today, God still do miracles. MS Van Dai told me last month that he had prayed for many people in the church who had cancer and they are well now, especially Cô Thảo even though cancer had spread into many parts in her body and there was no hopes in human terms.

Đồng sống với Chúa Jesus means đồng hành (đi với Chúa) and đồng công (cùng làm việc) với Chúa.

Working with God:

There are many Scriptures telling us that God wants us to work with Him and it’s vinh dự và ân điển for those who do. By His following word, God wants us “được vui mừng và phước hạnh” khi làm việc với Him and loving other people.

Working with God also means imitate what God does. Jesus told us in the Lord’s Prayer that we should pray “Xin tha tội lỗi cho chúng con, như chúng con tha kẻ phạm tội nghịch cùng chúng con.” – Matt 5:12.  And “Chúng ta yêu, vì Chúa đã yêu chúng ta trước.” – 1 John 4:19.

We see that God will bless us so we can be the blessing to other people. And God will give us more to do more.

And finally, Jesus said, we can work with God, imitate God and rest in God (Matt 11:28-30 – “Hỡi những kẻ mệt mỏi và gánh nặng, hãy đến cùng ta, ta sẽ cho các ngươi được yên nghỉ.

Being holy:

In order to đồng sống with Jesus and to be fruitful, we must remember to be holy because God is holy (1 Peter 1:16). We are God’s temple and we need to be trong sạch, xứng đáng để cho Chúa ngự vào. Xin thưa, we can’t do it by ourselves and need God’s help us through the transformational work of the Holy Spirit.

Conclusions:

Và để kết luận, today is December 20 and in 5 days, we will celebrate Christmas, the birth of Jesus. Thank God for sending Jesus to live and die for us. We are so blessed because God chose us to share with Jesus as we just went through. We remember and have compassion for the 100 million people in Vietnam and 200-300 thousand people around us here. We think about their lost souls. Most of them have struggles in life, both the rich and the poor with different issues, because life is not meant to be easy. They don’t have Jesus and they don’t know true and lasting Peace, Joy and Hope.

Being God’s children, we have Peace and Joy because we have Jesus’ Spirit in our hearts. Because of sins in the past and regrets, people may find it hard to have peace and joy and even go on. And they may be too proud of their successes to surrender to God to receive His peace. Paul is encouraging Christians to focus on their future in Christ, rather than dwelling on past mistakes or accomplishments. He urges them to “bỏ những việc ở đàng sau” and to “nhắm mục đích” of eternal life. God has forgiven our sins and the Holy Spirit will help us live in peace and full of joy to represent Him and to be the light of the world.

We also have Hope for the upcoming New Year 2025 because our life is with Jesus. God is protecting us and His Word blesses us. There is a story about the orphans in WW2 and hope. Each of them was given a slice of bred before going to bed, not to eat but to hold on. It was found that they fall to sleep more easily because of hope that tomorrow they will have something to eat, and will not go hungry. For us, we have Jesus who is the Bread of Life. His Spirit is in our hearts. Like the orphans and a slice of bread, we have God’s words in our hands, whether it is the Bible or a Bible app in our cell phones. We can carry God’s words with us everywhere and we can call on God anytime we need Him. We thank God that we share life with Jesus and we also thank God that Jesus is sharing life with us.

Before ending, I would like to tell a story of Xmas. There was a man who went into a store to buy a Xmas gift for his wife. He told the clerk, just pick anything for me worth about $500 and wrap it very nicely in red paper because his wife really likes red. The clerk asked, don’t you want to choose something that your wife may like. The man said, “Don’t worry, anything is good because the present will be put down near the Christmas tree in the house for a few days, then after Xmas, my wife will bring it back to get a refund. She won’t open it and doesn’t want to know what is inside”.

This may be the thinking and attitude that many people have about Xmas. They celebrate Xmas, they are happy for a few days and then go back to their life as lost sinners. They never open the present, never know about Jesus là God’s gift for them. They never know that Jesus was God who had died for them in order to take them in as His children for an everlasting life… As MS Van Dai, MS Hong and MS Phu have said many times in church, we have the best opportunity in the year to invite our friends and other people to church for Xmas. Let’s pray for the people we meet and invite, so they will come to hear and receive Jesus as their Savior, the most beautiful and precious gift of all.

Closing prayers:

Dear God, our heavenly Father. In the quiet time this morning, thank you God for thời giờ học KT của Nhóm Jeremi, reminding us. We are grateful that we are chosen to “đồng sống with Jesus”. Một ân điển đặc biệt và quí báu để chúng con được vui mừng and thank God everyday and especially in the Christmas season. We are mere earthen vessels, và with the indwelling Holy Spirit, we have the great power of the Holy Spirit to change our lives from the inside out and the riches of God to love other people, to have compassion for the lost.  Please have mercy on 100 million people in Vietnam and 300 thousand people around us here, and save their souls for Jesus. For your glory, please bless your church in Midway City, tất cả các OB MS, các ban ngành, tất cả người lớn, and người trẻ, so that we đồng hành, đồng công và đồng sống with Jesus in love and unity càng hơn in the upcoming New Year 2025.  Thank you Jesus and in Jesus name, we pray.
