How are things going? Begin each coaching session by taking a genuine interest in the people you are meeting with. Let them know they are important. Share some stories, listen to what is going on in their lives, laugh, share concern, and pray with each other. Let them know you appreciate their taking their time to meet with you. Share that you are excited about what God is doing. Celebrate any and all progress and seek to inspire them. This should be fun.
Coach the heart. Never forget that everything that is eternally important depends on loving God and loving people. Our love for God and our love for people will not grow without intentional focus and direction. Every time I ask the question “What are you learning about loving God and loving people?” I am reminded that this is what all the Law and the Prophets and eternal life are hanging on.
This is what brings meaning, purpose, and joy to everyday life. As I listen to what others are learning about loving God and loving people, I learn how I can better fulfill these two great commandments. The difference between leadership and manipulation is motive. Loving God and loving people are the greatest motives we can live by. As these two commandments take up residence in our lives, they become our flesh-and blood gospel.
